6.4 What Does the Manager Want?
If you have a manager who insinuates himself into your work, ask that manager what he wants. Specifically, ask for the business outcomes the manager wants.
In this case, John wants this project to be done faster so the next project can be started earlier. The organization had too much pending work in the project portfolio. When the team finished this project, they could move to the next one.
Sometimes, managers want to release earlier, especially if they arenât using an agile approach. In that case, the team might be able to complete what theyâre doing and move to the next project.
Whatever the case, the project team always has options. Use business outcomes to decide on the option.
Itâs okay for a manager to want a project to end early. Managers can want anything. Itâs how they act on those wishes that might be a problem. As long as managers trust in their project teams, and as long as those project teams work to earn trust, both sides can work together.
When a manager insists on overriding estimates or any other judgments about the work, that manager is incongruent. The manager is not considering the person or the context of the work.
